Minerals or mineral substances are very often mentioned in connection with the construction industry or in the context of renovation or insulation work. A mineral building material is an inorganic, non-metallic substance that is made up of crystalline components. These are often natural minerals (e.g. sand, natural stone or clay). However, there are also formed material mixtures that consist of sieved or ground minerals and are given the desired strength by crystallizing a binding agent (e.g. anhydrite, burnt lime, clay or cement). Classic mineral building materials include natural stone, clay, gypsum, lime mortar, concrete and ceramics.
