Asbestos

Asbestos (from the ancient Greek word ἄσβεστος or asbestos, meaning "imperishable") refers to naturally occurring fibrous and crystallized silicate minerals. They are also known as amiant or mountain flax. Asbestos is produced by underground and surface mining. Blue, brown or white asbestos was mainly used, with white asbestos being the most commonly used industrially. They can be processed for technical use and are available as fibers of different lengths for further use. Asbestos fibers are highly resistant to acids, chemicals and heat. They also have high strength and above-average insulating properties. Since it has been proven that asbestos can cause damage to health, the fibers may no longer be used in many countries.
